Answers for Common Brewing Questions

Does the type of grinder matter?

It absolutely does!

The grinder you buy does not have to be expensive, but it needs to be a burr grinder and not a blade grinder.

Why?

Blade grinders can not control the consistency of the grind size. When doing a pour over, which is our recommended method, the grinds need to be between a medium and fine grind size to get the best results.

Whats the difference between a French Press and Pour Over?

When doing a French press you need a coarser grind to help keep the grinds from escaping through the plunger device and into your coffee. A French press takes anywhere from 8-10 minutes to complete, while with a pour over all you need is a cone shaped filter. The device to hold the filter and hot water is heated to approximately 200 degrees.

Does water temperature matter?

Yes it does, the water temperature is very important for proper extraction. Coffee should be brewed with water between 195-205 degrees Fahrenheit. If the water is too hot, the coffee will produce a burnt flavor . If the water is not hot enough the flavor of the coffee will be weak.
